The Schwartz Room

“These acts of kindness – the simple human touch from my caregivers - have made the unbearable bearable”

Each of our rooms have a name. The name is after someone whose values we are keen to promote within the clinic. The Schwartz room is named after Ken Schwartz, a Boston Attorney who was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. He was only 40 and a non-smoker. He ate well and exercised regularly. He could have been any one of us.

During his 10-month ordeal, Ken came to realise that what matters most during an illness is the human connection between patients and their caregivers.

The Schwartz Centre for Compassionate Care was founded by him as were Schwartz rounds.

@Next Practice Deakin, Schwartz’s story about the human side of care and the power of compassion and kindness, is an integral part of our everyday work through our acts of kindness for our patients and community.
